About Wandest

Wandest is a small independent site about planning hiking trips well, meaning the preparation that happens before you reach the trailhead.

What the hiking guides cover

Route choice and timing, packing, weather and mountain safety, navigation, low-impact hiking and first steps into multi-day trips. The guides are general and written for walkers in hill and mountain areas in temperate climates. How to plan a day hike is a good place to begin.

How the guides are put together

The advice draws on long-established hiking practice, such as Naismith's rule for timing, the ten essentials and the Leave No Trace principles, and on public guidance from mountain safety and weather organisations. We describe principles instead of specific trails, because route conditions change and should be checked locally.

The calculator and checklist

The hiking time calculator and the packing checklist run in your browser. The checklist stores your ticks in your own browser so they're there next time. Nothing is sent to us.

What we are not

We aren't a guiding company, tour operator or rescue service, and we don't sell gear. There are no partner links on this site. Nothing here replaces training, local knowledge or your own judgement on the day.

About Wandest FAQ

Do you recommend specific trails?

No. Route conditions change, so we describe how to choose and plan a route and leave trail details to local sources and land managers.

Does Wandest earn money from gear links?

No. There are no partner links on this site, and we don't sell gear.

Can Wandest help in an emergency?

No. We're not a rescue service. Call 112 in Europe, 911 in the US and Canada, or the local emergency number. The weather and safety guide explains what to do while you wait.
